Kalchofengut Unken

Kalchofengut Unken
In the old "Kalchofengut", a farmhouse from the 16th century, the museum association "Festung Kniepaß" could rent three rooms from the house owners, the Perchtbauern, in 1972. These rooms could be used for exhibiting a small part of the rural cultural assets collected through the years. Two residents still live in the Kalchofengut, demonstrating the small collection to interested visitors.

After the last tenants passed away, the museum association could rent the whole house from 1985. It has been rearranged into a museum without any alteration. Only exhibits from the near proximity are presented. The farmhouse parlour and the smokehouse are kept in their original state. The archaeological finds from Unken, Lofer and St. Martin bei Lofer are exhibited in the "Kaskeller". A stable is used for the exhibition of all rural implements, whilst a second serves as a depot. Special exhibitions that change yearly are located in the two rooms on the ground floor.

Additional rooms can be visited on the first floor, accessible through an old staircase: a nice "Schönkammer" as well as a room used as the "Sakralkammer" (sacral chamber) and the "Rembarn" (barn floor)  where farmer implements are displayed.
The museum in the Kalchofengut can be reached with the bus Salzburg-Zell/See, bus station Unken/Kramerwirt. From there its a 15 minute walk along the road, leading into the Heutal. With the car, coming from Salzburg, after the border take the road towards Unken, then up to Kramerwirt. Turn right before the high financial building and along the Heutalstraße up to Kalchofengut. A flag is outside during exhibition time.
