Prax Glacial Cave
A nature experience for sportive and an insiders tip amongst the places of interest within the state of Salzburg... nearly no one knows the Prax Glacial Cave!
The Prax Glacial Cave is the only developed passageway glacial cave in the Pinzgau Alps. The cave can only be visited from spring till late autumn, as long as the snow situation permits. The guides are undertaken by government-recognized cave guides.
The entrance is located at 1600m above sea level, above St. Martin bei Lofer. The walking time is 2.5 hours long and leads over Maria Kirchental. The temperature in the cave is +2° C.
The Prax cavern originated from the tertiary and in the ice age, millions of years ago. The eroding effect of condensation and glacier water and the disrupting power of frost once formed the Prax cave.
The way in the Prax cave, with a length of about 1km leads you through romantic corridors, tunnels and large halls. You discover along the same way, that the glacial water took. You come outdoors again, in the middle of the Black Wall, offering you a fabulous view to the northern Steinberg Mountains with the Schmidt-Zabierow hut, the Grubhörndel area and the bordering mountains of Bavaria. Depending on the season, you can admire the imposing ice pillars, ice drops, ice cudgels and nice ground ice.
You find many Alpine flowers along the way to the Prax cave, as well as very rare plants. You can also encounter wild animals if you are lucky. Animals like cavern butterflies and bats can be observed in the Prax cave. Discover fossils and petrifactions from the creation of the Triasmeer.
